5 Days Lactating: Monitoring Baby’s Weight and Diapers

Acceptable Weight Loss and Tracking Output

By now, your milk supply is better established, and you should notice your baby actively swallowing during feeds. Breast fullness may decrease as your body adjusts to your baby’s needs, a normal part of milk regulation.

It’s normal for newborns to lose up to 7-10% of their birth weight in the first few days. By Day 5, they should start gaining weight again. Check diaper output: 6+ wet diapers and 3-4 yellow bowel movements per day indicate they’re getting enough milk.

Tips for You Today
  • Celebrate your baby’s progress and your own—you’re providing perfect nutrition!
  • If you’re concerned about weight loss, consult a lactation consultant. Early intervention ensures you’re on track.
  • Take moments to breathe deeply and connect with your baby. Small rituals like this can ease hormonal shifts and emotional stress.
Fun Fact:

Human milk changes color and consistency when a baby is sick, delivering more antibodies and immune factors.
