Feeding and Preventing Excess Bilirubin Levels
Your milk is now transitioning to a lighter, creamier color as the fat content increases. This milk helps your baby’s digestive system process bilirubin, a substance responsible for jaundice. Frequent feeding is crucial to clear bilirubin through bowel movements.
Your breasts might feel softer after feeding, a sign that milk is being effectively transferred. However, if your baby appears excessively sleepy or they start to appear jaundice (yellowing skin or eyes), consult your pediatrician.
Tips for You Today
- Watch for early feeding cues (rooting, sucking hands) to encourage regular feeding.
- If your baby struggles to latch or stays too sleepy to feed, use a pump or hand express into their mouth and/or offer expressed milk via spoon or cup.
- Feeling overwhelmed? Your emotional ups and downs are normal but you should talk to a care provider if your feelings are persistent or intrusive.
Fun Fact:
Breast milk can soothe diaper rash due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
